Media Coverage
How is this issue covered in the media?
Every day hundreds of thousands of people read, listen, watch and are simply exposed to media. Due to this I intend to highlight some of the moments online where this issue is talked about by mass media and critique the way it is represented and covered by said media.

Examples
The following mass media has covered this issue, please read about them.
Global Citizen is a news article and a woman Leah Rodriguez wrote a story on the treatment of women in media. In this story Leah uses a multitude of examples and statistics to show the lack of representation in media and further solidifies her points with reasons as to why this lack of representation negatively affects women. She says, "When women have a seat at the table they are more likely to advocate for other women". This is important because without women advocating for each other we will never find ourselves to be represented further.

CNN frequently talks about women's representation in media, one of the times they did was in this video where they talked about how men did not used to think women were funny enough to be on late-night TV. Late night TV was said to be for the men who were funny and willing to act out "fart, burp and be loud". CNN talks about this topic in a well and thoughtful manner even being sure to mention that yes we may have come far but we haven't nearly come far enough since there's "still only 25% women".

This CNN article goes over the statistics regarding how many women have been leads in family films since 2007. Starting then there were about 24% female leads in family films which grew to a whopping 48% in 2019. This is a huge milestone for female actors however CNN doesn't fail to recognize that we still have strides to make. over sexualization of women in media is still very prevalent. Female characters are 6 TIMES more likely to be in revealing clothing than men. So despite the increase in female representation we must still continue to push for change and equality.

This article by BBC covers an interesting topic about women's violence as portrayed in movies and how it sparked some controversy over whether is it female empowerment or "toxic feminism" meanwhile its states that male violence has sparked far less controversy over the years, so why is it that its so wrong form women in media to play violent characters? I think this article covers a good topic however it seems to be hard to understand and could perhaps perform better if it went into more detail instead of cramming a bunch of information into giant paragraphs and not truly getting into the necessary topics such as more on why women and mens violent portrayals spark such different responses.

Now this song can be said to be very intense. It is a song about sexual assault and the mistreatment of women and minorities because they aren't straight white men. I felt it was important to mention this song because the artist, Sofia, receive insane backlash from men who were made uncomfortable by this song. and many people and myself feel that if this song and the topics it covers on the way women are treated make you uncomfortable, that's how you know there is a problem.

Pretty woman is a movie that I have seen multiple times and loves as a kid, but as you get older things in movies that you may have found funny or cute can change meaning. Pretty woman is in general a movie about a prostitute that found a rich man to turn her into a lady and "refine" her. This concept in general is toxic and a terrible representation of women. This makes women who may be in the "SW" industry seem like they need to be fixed which they do not. The actress who was originally offered the role even turned it down because this disgusting excuse for a movie was covered up as a cute romantic fairy tail.

This article talks about how media isn't representing our world accurately in the way that there isn't nearly enough women showcased in the media. The article mentions BBC and their attempts to make the faces of their shows 50/50 this led them to join a movement called the "50:50 project" where 74% of shows who have participated have reached over 50% female representation since 2019. This project while working tirelessly to fix the lack of representation it cannot fix the lack of gender equality. The article makes this clear while believing that with a growth mindset and the want for change we can tackle gender equality in the same way.

This article talks about the science behind gender identity and how a lack of representation of women in media can affect young kids gender identities. This article goes over when young kids start to develop a gender identity (about 17 months) and also uses the fact that media is one of the most common things we are exposed to to solidify its point that when women are underrepresented it not only limits the opportunities for women who want to be part of the industry but also doesn't leave room for the young minds to be nurtured into wanting to work in the industry. Not having female role models for young women is detrimental to their developmental health.

This website is the home of the 50:50 Equality Project which as aforementioned, is the project started by BBC that is working tirelessly to fight for women's equal representation in media. This project is a tool that is meant to be utilized by companies in order to track their %'s by which men and women appear on their shows. This allows them to calculate the % that they have women to men appearances in order to achieve the 50:50 that this project advocates for!

This article talks about female character in video games, specifically games where you can create your own character because its so overly common that all female characters in these games are skinny beautiful "sex goddesses" that are poorly armored compared to their male counterparts who are muscular and armored in a realistic way. This article explores why women are so overly sexualized in video games and discusses why video games are so geared towards men in the way they play and the way the community acts.
